Wrong planchet error, struck on a Nicaragua 5 centavos planchet, with a weight of 3.0 grams and nickel metal. The coin is not attributed by NGC as being on this countries planchets, but there is no question it is.
The planchet was produced by the Scovill Manufacturing Company for that country in 1898, but at the same time it was also producing v-nickel planchets for the Philadelphia Mint. This Nicaraguan planchet doubtless was accidentally mixed into the v-nickel planchets being sent to Philadelphia, which is how it ended up getting struck by v-nickel dies. The coin comes with an ANACS insert saying it is on a Nicaraguan 5 centavos planchet. A scarce wrong planchet error.
