Off-metal 1943-S Jefferson nickel struck on a Lincoln steel cent planchet. The coin is steel, with dark gray surfaces and is much smaller than a normal nickel. Also, being steel is is obviously the wrong color compared to a normal nickel. The error occurred when a planchet intended for striking 1943 steel cents was fed into a press striking 1943-S Jefferson nickels and was struck. A rare error type, although perhaps more common than most people would think. The demand for 1943 errors is and always has been high, and major errors like this disappear quickly when they come on the market.
