PCGS 1916 buffalo nickel elliptical clip. The coin has an oval shape, and is an elliptical clip. Elliptical clips are extremely rare on buffalo nickels, with only around 2 or 3 known.
Elliptical clips occur when the sheet of planchet material is fed into the blanking press, but the punches fail to fully punched the blanks out. The sheet is adjusted and fed back into the press, and the punches then overlap the partially punched blanks creating "elliptical" shaped blanks.
